From the recording Throwing My Mind In the Air

Listen to radio interview about this songJason e-mailed me a document that contained half a song title, "Throwing..." with a blank after it, and a 1st and 3rd line to a verse. My job was to fill in the blanks and send it back. Then he wrote the 1st and 3rd lines to another verse and sent that to me. Next came lines and blanks to a chorus.
Around the same time, independent of the lyric effort, I had sent a WAV file to Jason with nothing but a bass line, with the idea that he would add any instrument he wanted to without any preconceived ideas about what chords were appropriate, what the eventual melody would be, or where the verses, chorus, bridge, instrumental breaks and so on would be. It went back and forth for a while until finally a song emerged.
But what were the melody and the lyrics? I found a way of fitting the e-mailed lyrics to what we had created, and created a melody.
By the time the final recording was made, I had basically done all the instruments myself, since Jason's great drum track didn't fit the instrumentation that came afterward. But the song definitely belongs to both of us, and as a finishing touch on this album, Jason re-recorded my questionable vocals.
So vocals and weird intro by Jason, the rest by me.
Mixed and mastered by me.

Lyrics

Throwing My Mind In the Air

Your tongue is stuck to the freezer door
Diet of words please don’t say anymore
The sound of laughter is a bitter thing
Aimed at the heart only stings

Filibuster to waste your time
Punish your lips for the crime
Too many monsters underneath my bed
Nightmares the things you’ve said

I’ve been throwing my mind in the air
Just to fill my days
Hoping somebody catches my prayer
In a thousand different ways

You suck the moisture from my soul
Dip your hand in the common bowl
Putrified the fish come out
Vanity beneath the shroud

I’ve been throwing my mind in the air
Just to fill my days
Hoping somebody catches my prayer
In a thousand different ways

Your tongue is stuck to the cellar floor
The phone is dead, there’s no knock on my door

Wounds only fester over time
Apologize or I ain’t worth a dime
Half way to you is half way to me
Search your heart and find the key

I’ve been throwing my mind in the air
Just to fill my days
Hoping somebody catches my prayer
In a thousand different ways
