From the recording Just As You Are

Listen to radio interview about this song
I originally conceived this song at the piano way back in high school. The lyrical idea was thematically along the lines of Billy Joel's Just the Way You Are, but my words were were impossibly stupid and sappy. Jason liked the basic musical idea, so I brought the song with me for a weekend at the New Jersey shore with Jason and his wife Elaine. Late Saturday night I pulled it out and we wrote the new lyrics together, except that we couldn't come up with the final bridge. After retiring to bed I sat up for a while and came up with words for the bridge, but by morning Jason had also come up with words that were a lot better. So that's what we kept. I don't even remember what I had come up with - it was probably hopeless.
The only lyrical idea we kept from the original song I partially wrote all those years ago was the title. The song is now basically about the army of aging Dead-heads with no hair on top, and gray pony tails in back. The subtle recommendation is to grow up, for Pete's sake.
Electric guitar and lead vocals by Jason, all other instruments and background vocals by me.
Mixed and mastered by me.

Lyrics

Just As You Are

Just as you are you are
Living a fantasy
You can’t turn the clock back
And be what you used to be
Just as you are you are
You’re not a parody
Somewhere deep inside
A real personality
And I can see
Pushing up from the...

Gray skies blue
Blue isn’t you
Grateful used to be you

Break away
After the dead
Realize
It’s all in your head
Tripping on a thread

Just as you are you are
Get over vanity
Cut that silver tail
And pop in on reality
Just as you are you are
Never too late to be
Crawl back to today
And rediscover your dignity
And I can see
Pushing up from the…

Blue skies gray
Follow the day
Lose that bus far away

Tie dyed brain
Won’t feel the pain
Golden age is the page
Waiting for you

Just as you are you are
Living a fantasy
Somewhere deep inside
A real personality
Just as you are you are
You’re not a parody
You can’t turn the clock back
And be what you used to be
But I can see

Take a cue from Mister G
In a dream he spoke to me
He conveyed his sympathy
But it’s time to set you free

Just as you are you are
Living a fantasy
Just as you are you are
Living a fantasy
