From the recording <br>God In a Box

Listen to radio interview about this song
I was speaking to a Lutheran pastor some years ago, and when he insisted that God is a mystery and can't be understood, I countered that since Jehovah has taken great pains to reveal himself to us through his word, he is not a mystery to me and about 7 million others, although there are many things that we have all eternity to learn about him. He replied that "you can't put God in a box," meaning that we can't invent an understanding of him that's convenient to ourselves so that it all makes sense, as if we've done that to get around some collective mental aversion to mysteries.
He probably thought he was waxing intelligent, but I just laughed inside and said "Yeah, that's it, we've got God in a box because we're content to understand him." And this man is responsible for the spiritual lives of his flock! I immediately thought I would have to write a song about this foolish conversation, and here it is.

Lyrics

God In a Box

Confusion is king
Everything about him is a mystery
Wants you to know
Biggest snow job ain’t supposed to be

Open the book
Take a good look at what a name can mean
Love you to
See right through the smoke screen

And we got God
We got God in a box
Yeah we got God
We got God in a box
Wish it so
Feed your head in a fog
Then we got God
We got God in a box

Truth it denies
Pearls to the wise digging for yourself
You know his name
Who’s to blame if you leave it on the shelf

Heaven sent
I don’t invent ideals to suit my mind
Truth be told
I’m not bold enough to cure the blind

And we got God
We got God in a box
Yeah we got God
We got God in a box
Wish it so
Feed your head in a fog
Then we got God
We got God in a box

Excuse me if it all makes sense
I didn’t make it up
Elite is not my cup of tea
Drink from the open cup

And we got God
We got God in a box

And we got God
We got God in a box
Yeah we got God
We got God in a box
Wish it so
Feed your head in a fog
We got God
We got God in a box
